PARALLELO 38

SYNOPSIS

Fabio Sgroi is 58 years old and lives in Palermo. Every day, he goes to the Department of Cultural Heritage, where he works as a photographer for the Sicilian Region. But Fabio is not just an “ordinary” employee, in Palermo he is a living memory of a particular time; from the underground punk scene he belonged to, as a musician playing guitar in bands like MG, to crime and social events, his photographic work is a crucial testimony of a city with harsh past experiences.

Fabio is a “punk insider” who offers an unprecedented version of universally known events. He is joined by the protagonists of that “alien scene” who fueled an underground movement in a city under siege, whose lives today took controversial turns.

But who has survived all this and how? Does photography have the power to change history and our perception of events?

Exploring his decade-long photographic archive, a witness of one of the most violent moments in Italy’s history; the construction of the bunker courtroom for the Maxi Trial, the victims of mafia attacks and police violence, this documentary is a sonic journey through the life and death in Palermo over the last 40 years.

Artistic Concept

The portrait of Palermo that emerges very clearly from the voices of the protagonists of this film is that of a “headless” city where violent energies clash, leading to significant “explosions”. It’s no coincidence that the city’s symbol-painting is “The Triumph of Death,” an imposing fresco, that even though never shown, is the true backdrop of almost the entire documentary.

Contrary to the collective imagery that describes a lively and colorful folkloric place, I want to represent it as a dystopian city, the same one narrated by those who lived there. As aesthetic references, rather than a documentary with a journalistic approach, I preferred to take inspiration from works such us Chris Marker’s La jetée or the recent debut Spectre: Sanity, Madness & the Family by french musician Para One. The soundtrack will be the distorted sound of bands whose musicians are the same protagonists of the film.
